This is wide-plank floors and today we're going to talk about the different, finishing options and colors available for a birch floor. Birch floors are made from a yellow birch tree, and one of the things that make birch so prized is the color variation that you can see in this piece from having the lighter colored SAP wood to the darker reddish heartwood. That red color is very unique to birch and one of the things that makes it so pretty today.
The choices that are most common for finishing a birch floor are to either uses an oil finish, which is what you see here that heightens the red color and add some overall golden amber tones to the floor. The second most popular choice is to use a water-based finish, which actually leaves the wood. Looking much more like the natural unfinished piece of wood, you can still see the color variation, but it doesn't have quite the golden amber tones of an oil-based finish.
One of the final things you might consider in finishing a birch floor is to use a stain on the birch. This is not something I recommend, as you can see in this piece, its eliminated all the beautiful color variation that we just spoke about because that variation is one of the reasons people choose a birch floor. We don't suggest staining your birch floor after installation again. This is Chris Tsai. I hope that the different finished options we shared with you today are helpful in determining how you'd like to finish your birch floor.
