Wide flooring and interior wood products. Our design consultants work directly with you to find product solutions that meet your needs. Our focus is to deliver the highest quality and best value hi. I'm Ben Hall we've recently completed some renovations here at our office and we thought we'd take this opportunity to show you how we've installed and finished this beautiful figured birch flooring, we've prepped our sub floor and we're ready to begin the process of acclamation. It's August here in Connecticut, so we're running both the air conditioner and a dehumidifier which will help minimize contraction during the dry winter months.
Greg and Tom are separating the planks with three to four acclamation sticks per layer to allow for proper air flow. We're using a moisture meter to make sure sub floor and flooring are within two percent moisture content of each other before installation. The time required for acclamation varies based on your site conditions, but one to two weeks is usually sufficient. The base of our sub floor consists of a dry above grade concrete slab with a six-milliliter plastic vapor barrier laid over it.
Next, we overlap two layers of 3/4 inch, plywood and fasten them together with screws to create a sturdy floating sub floor. The vapor barrier will prevent any remaining moisture in the concrete from permeating into the plywood and flooring above in order to ensure proper adhesion, you'll need to vacuum the sub floor and make sure there are no protruding nail head screws, paint or greasy spots that might compromise the Adhesive bond, it's a simple chore, but a critical one and should be done several times during installation to keep the surfaces clean and is dust free as possible. Now national wood flooring Association requires 3/4 of an inch space on each side.
Of course, we created these spacers to give us a race against the wall in the board, so the most important part when starting the floor is getting a straight line. So what we did is we went ahead and put some of these spaces on the board. That goes the 3/4 of an inch on all sides of this first row, and then we went ahead and pop the chalk line to get ourselves a very straight line in addition to blind nailing. These wide boards will also need to be glued to firmly secure them to the sub floor. Greg is using a pneumatic nail gun to fire Brad nails into the top of the planks along the wall.
